Awards to champion sporting excellence in BME communities

We are proud to support the first-ever awards recognising the sporting achievements of people from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities

The British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards will showcase and celebrate sporting excellence among people from BME backgrounds – with the aim of inspiring more BME people to take up sport. It also aims to inspire the next generation of major sporting talent.

Huggy’s Gym, Peckham BMX and One World Sports are the three nominees for the Sport England-sponsored Community Sports Project award.

Huggy’s Gym in Bradford, which was awarded £42,000 worth of funding by Sport England, recently became the latest Yorkshire boxing club to gain Clubmark accreditation.

The Inspired Facilities-funded project is up against Peckham BMX, home to one of the largest BMX tracks in the UK, and One World Sports, a boxing gym within a Sheffield mosque that celebrated its official opening last January.

Other awards include Coach of the Year, Unsung Hero of the Year and Performance of the Year. The shortlist for the 10 award categories went live this week and the public can vote for their favourite nominees via a special telephone line.

The awards are backed by Helen Grant, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Equalities. She said: “I'm delighted to be attending the British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards. I want to see everyone succeed in and get the benefits from their chosen sport. That is why it is important that we celebrate and inspire Britain's younger generation. I congratulate the organisers for arranging what promises to be a fantastic evening.”
