This video consists of an interview with Sport England’s Executive Director for Place, Lisa Dodd-Mayne, explaining the progress and investments that have been made on our place partnerships work over the last 12 months. The video contains a piece to camera and cutaways clips of people getting active.
On screen is Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Executive Director for Place, Sport England. We can see her name, role and organisation on the screen too.
Lisa Dodd-Mayne: So here we are. I can't believe it's been one year since we announced our big expansion into place last year. Just to give you a scale of what that means in terms of numbers, we announced a year ago a total investment of £250 million into expanding out our priority place work.
There is a shot of disabled people taking part in power hockey, a young boy dribbling a football and a group of young people shooting a basketball into a hoop.
Lisa voice continues over the top of these shots.
She says: Through this investment we're encouraging local and national partners to work closer together to a shared purpose of tackling inactivity and inequality, making physical activity everybody's business. We've learnt a lot along our journey and working in a place based way, but some of the key things that we've learnt where you live and your individual circumstances has a fundamental influence on your activity levels.
You can see a shot of an older women playing badminton, a young boy shooting a football into an open goal and two girls playing basketball.
Lisa Dodd-Mayne: Across England, access to physical activity and sporting opportunities is not a level playing field, but certain places and communities have increased barriers to becoming more physically active. But years of under investment in local infrastructure and services have meant that spaces and places to be active are fewer in more deprived areas.
Feet walking along a path with a hopscotch appears on the screen. It is followed by a shot of a girl and her coach talking with basketballs in their hands, two people playing badminton and then a group of boys taking part in a game of power hockey.
You can hear Lisa’s voice over the top of these shots.
She says: Since launching our Place based investment last November, we have started working with 53 new places right the way across England. Alongside our local active partnerships, we have been partnering up with key stakeholders in each of these places to establish what the local ambition and approach will be. There's been some real positivity from these stakeholders about the approach we have chosen to take ground up and rooted in the needs of their communities.
Lisa appears back on screen in a different location. She is standing in front of autumnal leaves and a greenhouse.
She continues: Alongside this, we've also been working on two other key elements of our overall approach.
There is now a shot of people playing basketball and a man participating in a game of badminton.
Lisa’s voiceover says: We've begun to invest further in our original place partnerships, once known as the local delivery pilots.
Lisa is back on screen.
She says: We've also been developing our Place Universal Offer. £25 million of investment that will help even more places work in this way and evaluate and learn their impact using the skills, the tools, the resources that we've been able to see most effective in our work to date and deployed through our network of Active Partnerships to every part of the country.
We now see an older women hitting back a shuttlecock during a game of badminton.
Lisa Dodd-Mayne: Over the next 12 months, we have also started to make key investments into a number of these first phase places. So far, we've invested over £20 million with many more proposals for funding in the pipeline.
Appearing on screen is power hockey match, and sequencing shots of a young boy pulling the string of his bow before showing a different angle of him shooting it towards the target.
Lisa continues: Finally, we are now working towards our second phase of place expansion, taking us to up to 80 places in total. We are currently working side alongside our partners to work out where we need to go next as we continue to grow this approach with pace and impact.
The screen turns blue, and the white Sport England logo comes up.
