Environmental sustainability consultation launched

Share your views on what’s needed to help the sport and physical activity sector accelerate action on environmental sustainability.

12th May 2023

We’ve set up a consultation to hear your perspectives around positive climate action in sport.

From national organisations to local clubs and facilities, whether you’re already taking action or just starting to think about it, all views are welcome.

We’d love to learn about what you’re already doing to reduce your environmental impact, the greatest opportunities and priorities for change, and the challenges and support needed to overcome these.

In order to do this, our Environmental Sustainability Survey is open until 26 May and takes just 10-15 minutes to complete.

Andy Coley-Maud, our national partnerships lead, is keen to learn more about how we can work with the sport and physical activity sector to make it more environmentally sustainable.

“From energy use, travel, the production and consumption of sports equipment, goods and services, to our impact on biodiversity, we know that sport and physical activity has a significant environmental impact,” he said.

“As a sector we have the opportunity to create, influence and inspire positive environmental, health and societal change.

“This consultation will help us to understand both the role we can play in supporting sports and communities to protect and adapt the environments in which sport and physical activity takes place as our climate changes, and in working together towards our collective environmental ambitions.”

More information about why we've launched the consultation is available in the sustainability section of our site.

Small Grants Programme

In addition to the consultation, and in celebration of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, non-profit organisations can now apply to our Small Grants Programme for awards of £300-£15,000 towards projects which support environmental sustainability while helping communities to be more active.

The programme is our first community fund supporting environmental sustainability and is primarily focused on projects designed with and for people in areas of disadvantage.

We're inviting projects that focus on supporting inactive and less active people to become more active while reducing our impact on the environment – projects that can deliver both environmental and physical activity benefits for our local communities.

The applications should be designed with and for your local community, particularly benefit those experiencing greater disadvantage and focus on addressing any of three key environmental areas for our sector.

These areas are:

  • Reducing energy use
  • Encouraging responsible travel
  • Reducing waste and improving resource efficiency

The £4 million programme is open until 30 June 2023.
